In April of 2007, while at the Weaklinks model show in Toledo, Ohio, I took the opportunity to closely examine all products on display. One booth that amazed me with the quality of their products was Aero-works. I was looking to move up to a proven aerobatic model and of course something that will still fit in my vehicle. Upon my return home, I ordered the 60 sized Edge 540T from Aeroworks. The plane arrived shortly afterwards, but it was not till a year latter that I assembled the plane. The reason I waited so long to test and fly this plane is I wanted to improve my aerobatic flying skills. I spent a year flying one of the planes I have owned for about 5 years, a Hobbico Extra 300 AWARF (All wood, Almost ready to fly). The Extra 300 flies great, but it has a narrow speed envelope and it lands fast. With a completely calm day, I have to use flaperons to slow it down enough to land it on our model airplane facility’s paved runway.
Tale of the tape

Hobbico Extra 300S AWARF Plus Aero-works Edge 540T – 60 Size
Wingspan – 58.25 in (1480mm) 60 inches
Wing is solid core foam, Open - balsa built frame,
Wing Area – 590 sq. in (38.1dm^2) 693 square inches
Length – 49.75 in (1265mm) 55 inches
Engine – OS 70 Four stroke OS 91 FX 2 stroke
Weight – 6 pounds, 8 ounces, 7 pounds, 9 ounces

In the Edge 540T I installed a Spektrum DX6i receiver, Hitec 635 and 645 servos. The pull-pull setup is supplied for Rudder control and I used most of the hardware supplied with the kit. The weight came in at 7 pounds, 9 ounces with 1 ounce of weight on the tail to balance it out. I ran a couple of tanks of fuel to break in the motor. I was then set for the maiden flight. The first flight took place on a rather calm, exceptionally hot day at our local model airplane field. I had a friend to set the trim tabs on the first flight. I made a couple of taxi runs to get the feel for the runway handling and then we were off. The take-off run was straight down the runway and it lifted off very gently in about 75 feet. It only took 2 circuits and the plane was trimmed out. I took it easy for the first few flights to get the feel on how it flew. I am very happy with the flight characteristics, it will take-off at 1/3 throttle, knife-edges can be done at ½ throttle, and vertical climbs will continue until the power is pulled back. Snap rolls, spins, loops, etc. can all be done very precisely and with a very light touch on the sticks, it goes where you point it and it stops when you want it to. The plane requires very little trim changes throughout the whole speed envelope. Aero-works have a got a winner with this plane. Now, I wished I had not waited a year to build and fly this wonderful plane. If you want a quality plane, please checkout Aero-works complete line of ARF’s and their new line QB (Quick build) models. They have a superb line of Aerobatic planes of all types and sizes to choose from.
See you on the flight line
